CMP 100 introduces students to ocean conservation and development, starting with a broad introduction to the global ocean governance framework, marine environment, key industries, development imperatives, and conservation challenges. Oceans and associated coastal zones are critically important to sustaining life on Earth. A recent study published in Science, analysed satellite data and determined that industrial fisheries now cover 55 per cent of the World’s oceans: an area four times larger than the terrestrial area devoted to agriculture. In addition to fisheries, our oceans provide crucial highways and oceanscapes for shipping, oil and gas, seabed mining, blue carbon, coastal development, tourism and defence all of which must balance conservation and development imperatives as they navigate and exploit our marine environment. CMP 100 leads students through a number of case studies to build knowledge of human interaction with the marine environment, critical values, ocean conservation challenges, science and data and develops student expertise in analytical models, research skills and problem solving. Guest speakers from the ANCORS network will illustrate case studies and demonstrate problem solving and engagement strategies. The subject will contribute to course learning outcomes through contemporary case studies, and the application of analytical models that are currently used by governments, institutions and non-State actors to address these management challenges. The subject will actively use new technologies and satellite databases to visualise ocean conservation challenges, and utilise assessments that build skills in database analysis and mapping. Students will be exposed to multiple disciplines, and learn research, critical enquiry, problem solving and communication skills relevant to ocean managers and stakeholders. Lectures will be delivered online, while fortnightly workshops will engage students in analysis, problem solving and communication.
